Mexico 70 km Highway Chiapas

In the State of Chiapas the existing highway 157 , between Tuxltla Gutiérez and La Revolución was  in a very poor condition. The state of Chiapas ordered that the existing highway over a length of 70 km needed to be reconstructed in just 2,5 months’ time. By using PowerCem Technology (PCT) this “mission impossible” was succeeded successfully. The SCT (Federal Road Agency) is well known with the unique properties of PCT.  The reconstruction of the highway 157 showed major benefits regarding economics, low ecological footprint and saving valuable construction time.

 

The previous highway was an asphalt construction with a granular base. Based on the visual damage characteristics of the highway it is clear that a full reconstruction is required. 

 

By mixing RoadCem, a PCT  based product, and cement with the crushed asphalt and the current base material of the highway, the pavement construction will achieve unique mechanical properties.

 

After the RoadCem is mixed, the cement is mixed and after leveling an compaction, an asphalt surface layer of 0,05 m is applied.

 

The RoadCem is mixed with the existing hydraulic unbound material. The total thickness of the stabilization is 0,25 m, above a sandy gravel existing base.

 

To finish the project on such a short notice, two and a half months, the project was constructed by 4 contractors. Every contractor constructed approximately ¼ of the project.

PowerCem based technology leads to a substantially shorter construction time and lower costs in comparison with traditional methods.

The use of PowerCem based technology  results in a time advantage and economic benefits now and in the future.

 

Alternative roads are unknown for the biggest part of the region were highway 157 is located. This means that the construction methodology has to leave always one lane open for traffic. Due to the fact that RoadCem the hardening time significantly reduces, the constructed lane can be used after 24 hours.


The RoadCem stabilization was formed by a mixture of crushed asphalt and a granular base material. The dosage of RoadCem is 1,7 kg/m3, and the dosage of cement is 170 kg/m3. 

 

The highway finished on time, and the Seventy kilometers of road is opened for traffic.
